Future site of the Vauban Neighborhood, Freiberg, Germany. Before image of Vauban below. The view shows a former French army base. When the Cold War ended in 1990, the French said we are outta here. The area taken up by the base became the much celebrated Vauban Neighborhood.

The city of Freiberg bought the property and decided to build a neighborhood that would discourage the use of cars. The population of the n'hood is about 1300. Cars can make deliveries but cannot park and stay at residences. Residents of Vauban with a car must put the car in a nearby parking garage at considerable cost. My friends do not have a car. Its safe for any 5 year old to bike around Vauban. There is a tram line thru the middle of the neighborhood that goes to center Freiberg. During the day, the tram arrives every 8 minutes. Some people moved to Vauban for the post car culture, others bcuz its a great place for children. Large trees from the former French army base were saved. There are parks, gardens, greenery. A small commercial area but now what one would call business center. Just a few stores.
