Social Engineering, The Growth Economy And The Rise Of Populism

Here are some thoughts that deserve attention.

A primary tactic of social engineering as described by Bernays and others is to deliver a lot of toys and distractions to the general public.  An intentionally unflattering metaphor would be a factory farm feedlot.

Over consumption is core to social control and its also core to the growth based economy, the need to expand consumption and GNP to keep the entire ponzi scheme afloat.  As we are well aware, the eco logical and social consequences are severe.  What happens when the needs of growth begin to hit barriers and can’t be maintained?

That condition does not happen across the socio economic board all at the same time.  Those on the lower rungs of that ladder tend to feel the effects of economic malpractice first. That’s why the elites want to safeguard and perpetuate their privilege, to put distance between their lifestyles and the problems those lifestyles create.

Historically, the statistics show since the 1970’s with the rise of neo liberalism, wages have mostly stagnated for the middle and lower classes, organized labor has gone into decline, the difference in pay between workers and management has increased, economic and political wealth have only become more concentrated. Books have been written about these and related trends and issues. No need for detail here.

The assertion of the Primer is that limits to growth, as clearly explained by numerous researchers and writers will struggle more and more to float the economic ponzi scheme known as capitalism.

In the US and other parts of the more affluent world, we are already seeing middle and lower class stratas of population take on a more protectionist and populist set of beliefs by supporting leaders who are anti immigrant and ant global trade.  The belief that the interests of those with lesser incomes are not served by the economic control of the well off.  And the less well off  are totally correct.  After all, what happened to all the manufacturing jobs?

The re-election of Donald Trump is, of course, a perfect example of this isolationist push back to the so called elite. The surge of populism in Europe is the same story.

The message here is, capitalism and economic growth is becoming less able maintain social engineering an placate the roaring masses. Social and political stability depends on economic growth and keeping enough of society distracted and dumbed down to keep the whole project going.  The rise of populism is the early indicator that the distraction project is failing. There is not enough anger and frustration yet to challenge the System but the trends are moving in a direction that will more than likely see an increasingly large percentage of people, including those higher up the ladder,  in a growing number of countries pushing back against those they feel are not delivering the toys and distractions.

The upshot is, there are many millions of unhappy people, and their numbers will increase, who at the present time are investing enormous levels of frustration and hope in political heroes who are very unlikely capable of delivering the consumer culture to those disaffected. The popularity of people like Trump clearly and absolutely shows us the choices available to those who voted for Trump need to expand to include paradigm shift as described in the Primer and kindred sources elsewhere.

Paradigm shift would be a tough sell to most of those millions who voted for Trump at the present time. Like just about everyone else who has lived a more or less normal life, they have been on the receiving end of social engineering. But what seems like a fringe idea at present may well gain traction over time, especially if those who advocate positive alternatives to capitalism are able to connect with those populists who are feeling economically left behind. Both realms have many shared interests.

This is an amazing contradiction of capitalism and the growth based paradigm.  We are seeing economic growth and social engineering at odds with each other.  For those advocating healthy paradigm shift, this is a huge opportunity to reach out.

Summing Up

The idea of modern economic social engineering in the US dates back generations. Many people have helped shape the idea.  Bernays and Lippmann have plenty of company. Some would say the use of manipulative social and psychological techniques on anyone, much less on children, to promote consumption of unhealthy products to be un ethical.

We can credit social engineering with a dis-empowered society, largely unable and worse, disinterested to push back on the very System its oppressed by. A lot of people are actually paying the System that puts them down. In more recent years, we are seeing the critical phenomena of the needs of capitalism and its growth economy at odds with social engineering. As wealth becomes more concentrated and the proverbial middle class becomes more stressed, more people will become more put off by the existing social and economic set up. The hope is, those oppressed find a constructive way to channel that stress.

At the present time, it seems not so many people into maga style populism know of or are aware of permaculture and paradigm shift approaches to these increasingly challenging times. They do know maga, a sort of life saver when not much else is available.  If more of those currently into maga style populism knew about permaculture and paradigm shift as described in the Primer and elsewhere, many of those into maga would have a far more wholesome and positive choice to consider for their own and family's needs to address their stress.

Addressing the stress and put down imposed by the System in a positive way is spelled  P A R A D I G M  S H I F T.  Imagine, those in the orbit of Donald Trump shifting to paradigm shift for their own good, for their friends and families and the environment. Many benefits, all at the same time.
