Permaculture
Permaculture is an enormous asset to paradigm shift and a perfect complement to the wisdom of the world’s great spiritual traditions. Permacultue links the wisdom ideals to real life. PC is a holistic design system for taking care of human needs in ways that are healthy to people and planet. Permaculture is the accumulated knowledge of modern science, folk wisdom and what has been learned by way of countless practitioners and projects from real life experience. Sustainability and regeneration of natural and human systems are also core ideals of permaculture.
Permaculture ideals and principles point to action. Permaculture is a core set of ideals and principles for Be The Change.
Several of the core principles of permaculture include working with nature rather than at cross purposes. Also design holistically for multiple benefits, fair share, people care, earth care and efficiency. Other principles include produce no waste, choose simple and slow solutions, use edges and value the margins.
Several more principles include designing for multiple benefits with the smallest resource input as possible - reducing eco footprints. Catch and store energy, make best use of what is available, integrate rather than segregate.
Edges
Another permaculture principle is make use of edges. Edges are the boundaries between two [or more] conditions or systems. They can be physical, historical, or cultural. In between those two systems is a transition zone that can combine positive [or negative] characteristics from both systems, a place rich in potential and opportunity.
Humans are currently at two easily identifiable edges. One edge is the immense economic, social, political and environmental entity we call capitalism and its familiar consumer culture. Capitalism and the consumer culture can claim many accomplishments. Some of them praiseworthy, others not. One would be challenged to deny, capitalism is responsible for immense damage to people and planet.
The other system is a vision, the ideals, values, principles and already many inspiring real life examples that point towards an uplifted and positive alternative to capitalism and the consumer culture. A healthy present and future for people and planet.
In between these contrasting systems is a zone or edge that invites paradigm shift where we can make best use of the positives of both systems. Capitalism offers many tools and means of communication that can be immensely useful for paradigm shift. Capitalism also provides us with many examples of products and outcomes that do not fit a sustainable and uplifted society. The wisdom mentioned moments ago, permaculture and simple common sense offer vision, principles and ideals that certainly can assist creating alternatives to capitalism. We can also look to many existing, on the ground examples of the good humans are capable of that point the way.
The enormous, historical opportunity we have, the choice we have available, is to make use of this edge, this transition zone between capitalism and a healthy vision of what humans are capable of and deserve and make our choice for paradigm shift.
A New International Language
Permaculture can be described as a new international language. There are permaculture advocates and enthusiasts all over the world. When you meet someone who is familiar with permaculture, you know immediately, you have much in common.
There is limited global organization for permaculture but there is relative uniformity in what is called permaculture and its most well know learning experience a PDC, or permaculture design course. There is a national organization in the US with the task to help insure the quality and content of PDCs and those who teach them also, simply to make permaculture better known to the wider world.
There is a great deal about permaculture in book form and also on the internet including videos showing permaculture projects in real life. There is a link to my suburban permaculture project on youtube. The video clearly explains how the permaculture property supports many aspects of paradigm shift.
Society’s economic system, its urban design, transportation, housing, education and health care can all be based on Permaculture principles to serve the needs of an uplifted society. There is much to repair that can serve a healthy present and future.
Also important. People, friends and neighbors can make smart choices at home and in their own lives regardless of what happens elsewhere. The more positive examples of resilience and sustainability, the better.
Permaculture principles are perfect for paradigm shift, from home scale to the neighborhood, community, region and beyond. Permaculture is a perfect compliment to the wisdom of the world's great spiritual traditions, reducing eco footprints along with prioritizing our time and money. Permaculture is an emerging language that can be a great companion to paradigm shift.
