LION

The Local 20/20 economic action group in Port Townsend hatched a now autonomous entity named LION.  LION stands for Local Investing Opportunities Network. The group’s mission is to build prosperous local businesses, keep investing money in our invest money in the community and help build a more resilient and sustainable economy in East Jefferson County, Port Townsend area.

LION
clarifies it is not a loan or investment fund. It connects people who want to invest in local businesses with start up and expansion ideas. By 2024, fifty- eight LION members have invested almost fourteen million dollars in 132 local entities since 2008.

There is a process for an entity to qualify with LION. They must describe the opportunity, they must be local. Qualifying opportunities are shared with all LION members. Presentations can be made by the opportunity to those interested to invest.Further interest results in follow-on meetings between the parties. Once a relationship is formed, the terms of loans are agreed upon between the investor and the entity.

LION's website offers a great deal of information about its community investment program. Here are some highlights.

Primary sectors with investments are lead by food and farm, tourism and trade and small business. Lesser amounts have been invested in real estate and construction, arts, culture and advanced tech and manufacturing. Individual amounts invested are mostly less than $20,000.

Some entities seeking investment attracted one investment but slightly over half attracted two or more investors. Most of the investments were unsecured loans, others secured loans, some were equity investments. Average loans rates range between 5% and 6% with a duration between months and 30 years. Over a third of investment opportunities LION has shared with its members have received investments. The LION model has been spread to other areas throughout the country.looks to be very adaptable to other places. Very impressive.

Economic Localization done pasted into google doc

The point of departure for 20/20's economic localization group is the belief that the more locally based the region's economy, the stronger it will be and less affected by economic and political uncertainty and disruption.
