Eco Thrive is an approach to housing that is timely and visionary. As planned at this time, the model of small homes, density and shared amenities is intended for people who can't afford a more "normal" suburban property. As the Primer points out, "normal" suburbia is an ecological and social disaster.
Instead, Eco Thrive's approach to housing should be seen as a prototype for not only making home ownership more available to people with lesser means, this residential/community model can be used by people who could afford a larger sized suburban house but would PREFER to live in a smaller, more eco friendly, more socially intentional semi planned community.

The illustrations and explanations on the Eco Thrive website are so alluring, I include them here. You can clik on the image to enlarge. The Primer explains HERE and HERE that "traditional" suburbia can be retrofit to include many of the features of Eco Thrive. The Primer also points HERE to a repurposed apartment complex and HERE - an alternative chunk of a 1940's vintage neighborhood. All these examples - new construction and repurposed old - share the ideal of smaller eco footprints, resilience and building community.
